What size kayak paddle do I need?

Kayak paddle length is set by your height and your boat’s width. Most recreational paddlers on boats under 30 inches wide land between 220 and 230 cm. Wide fishing kayaks commonly need 240 to 260 cm. Measure the beam of your boat before you buy anything.

The sizing table

Height down the side, boat width across the top. Widths are the beam — the widest point of the hull, which is printed in almost every manufacturer’s specification and is easy to measure with a tape.

Lengths are the standard 10 cm increments paddles are actually sold in. Where you fall between two, see the tie-breakers below.

Why boat width matters more than your height

Look along a row of that table rather than down a column. For a given paddler, going from a narrow touring hull to a wide fishing boat changes the recommendation by 30 to 40 cm. Going from the shortest paddler to the tallest, on a fixed hull width, changes it by 20 or 30.

The reason is geometry. The blade has to reach past the widest point of the boat and enter the water cleanly beside the hull, not out at an angle. A wider boat pushes the entry point further from your body, and the paddle has to be long enough to get there without you leaning.

This is why the manufacturers size their lines the way they do: Bending Branches sells the recreational Whisper in 210 to 240 cm, and the Angler Classic — sold for wide fishing hulls — in 220 to 260 cm.

Two things that shift the answer

Seat height. A raised fishing seat puts you several inches higher, which has the same effect as a wider boat. If your sit-on-top has an elevated frame seat, go up one increment from the table.

Stroke style. A high-angle stroke — the paddle held steeply, blade entering close to the hull, used for speed and acceleration — wants a shorter paddle. A low-angle stroke — shaft nearly horizontal, relaxed, used for long distances — wants a longer one. Most recreational paddlers use low angle without ever thinking about it, which the table assumes.

How to check a paddle you already own

If your used boat came with a paddle, this tells you whether to keep it.

On land: stand the paddle upright beside you. You should be able to hook your fingers over the top blade with your arm extended overhead. Fingers curling over the whole blade means it is short; not reaching the blade at all means it is long. This is rough, but it catches badly wrong.

On the water, which is the real test:

• Knuckles hitting the gunwale on the recovery, or the blade barely clearing the hull: too short.
• Reaching out to plant the blade, and the boat yawing side to side each stroke: too long. Every stroke has become a sweep, which turns the boat.
• The whole blade goes under with no shaft submerged, and the boat tracks straight: correct.

When you fall between two sizes

Paddles come in 10 cm steps, so this happens often. Three tie-breakers, in order:

1. Go longer if the boat is wide or has a raised seat. Being short on a wide boat is the more painful error — you cannot fix it by technique.
2. Go shorter if you are buying a heavy paddle. A long lever with mass at the ends is more tiring, and on a 37 oz paddle that compounds.
3. Go shorter if your shoulders are the limiting factor. A shorter paddle is a lower-effort stroke at a higher cadence.

Once you have a length, choose the paddle itself on the best budget kayak paddles. Length is a requirement; weight and material are refinements.
