Diagnose before you buy
“The seat is uncomfortable” is two separate complaints, and people routinely buy the expensive fix for the cheap problem.
Numb backside after 30 to 60 minutes. This is pressure. Your weight is concentrated on a small area against a hard molded seat pan, and circulation suffers. The fix is a cushion, and it is cheap.
Aching lower back, and you find yourself slouching. This is support. Your lumbar spine has nothing holding it and the muscles that should be doing it tire. The fix is a seat with a real back panel, and it costs several times a cushion.

What to check on the boat before you order
- Attachment points. Most aftermarket seats clip to four D-rings or padeyes on a sit-on-top. Count yours. If the previous owner removed the seat, they may have removed the fittings too.
- Seat pan width. A sit-in cockpit has less room than a sit-on-top deck, and a wide aftermarket seat may simply not fit between the thigh braces.
- Whether the original seat is repairable. On a used boat the common failures are perished straps and a cracked plastic buckle, both of which are cheap to replace. Check before you replace the whole assembly.
The order to buy in
Cushion first, always, unless your complaint is specifically your lower back. It is the cheaper purchase, it fixes the more common problem, and it still works underneath a seat system if you buy one later.
