Two boats is a width problem before it is a weight problem
A single kayak on a roof uses the middle of the crossbars and the rest of the width is spare. A second kayak uses the spare. Whether it fits is decided by three numbers, and only one of them is on the rack’s box.
- Crossbar length. The usable width between the towers, not the overall bar. A 48-inch bar with towers taking six inches each end is 36 inches of rack.
- Boat beam. Two 30-inch recreational hulls side by side on their hulls need 60 inches plus clearance. Two 34-inch fishing hulls need 68. Almost no factory rack is that wide.
- The boat on its side. A 30-inch hull on edge is about 14 inches tall and a foot wide. That is why every two-boat solution puts at least one boat on edge.
Once the width works, weight is the second check, and it has two parts: what the rack publishes, and what the car’s roof publishes. Both matter and people check only the first.

The last row is the one the catalogs do not show and it is often the right answer: the boat you paddle most on a saddle, loaded easily from the back, and the second boat on edge in a cradle beside it. It uses less width than two saddles and loads easier than a stacker.
The 50-pound number
Malone publishes the Stax Pro2 at 200 pounds total — and 50 pounds per boat. That second figure is the one that matters and the one that gets missed, because a stacker looks like the obvious two-boat answer and 200 pounds looks like plenty.
A lot of used fishing kayaks weigh more than 50 pounds. A 12-foot sit-on-top is commonly 60 to 75; a pedal boat can be 90 or more. Each of those is over the published per-boat limit of the stacker, and the total rating does nothing to change that.
Two J-cradles at a published 75 pounds each carry the same two boats without exceeding anything. That is why the stacker leads this page for two light recreational boats and does not lead it for two heavy ones. The published weights of the boats you actually own decide the answer.
The roof rating is the other limit
The rack’s rating is not the ceiling. The vehicle’s roof load limit is, and it is usually the lower of the two.
Roof ratings on passenger cars commonly run somewhere between 100 and 165 pounds, and that figure has to include the crossbars, the carriers and both boats. Two 60-pound kayaks plus a rack system is easily 150 pounds. Some cars are fine; some are over before the second boat goes on.
The figure is in the owner’s manual, and it is a dynamic rating — the load the roof is designed to carry at speed over bumps, not a static weight. Nobody enforces it and the roof will not collapse on the driveway. What happens instead is that a heavily loaded roof on a tall vehicle changes how the car corners and stops, and that is worth knowing before a long drive.
Loading two boats alone
This is where the arrangement is really decided, and it is the reason the site’s standing advice is to be honest about how tall your vehicle is before buying on price.
A saddle lets you rest the bow on the rear bar and slide the boat forward from behind the car. You never carry the full weight overhead. On a tall vehicle this is the only method that works alone with a heavy boat.
A J-cradle means lifting the boat higher than the cradle arm and dropping it in on edge. On a low car, fine. On an SUV, it is the reason cradles end up unused in garages, and with two boats it is twice as tiring.
A stacker is the hardest: the boat goes up on edge against a vertical post and is held there while you strap it. It is a two-person job on anything but a low car with light boats.

Crossbar spread, and the front-to-back problem
Width gets the attention. The distance between the front and rear crossbars decides whether two boats are actually supported, and it is fixed by the car rather than chosen by you.
A kayak wants its two support points somewhere around a third of the way in from each end. On a 12-foot boat that is roughly four feet apart. Many hatchbacks and compact SUVs put the bars 24 to 30 inches apart, which supports the middle third of the hull and lets both ends cantilever. One boat tolerates that. Two boats double the cantilevered weight on the same two bars.
The fix is bow and stern lines, which turn the ends from cantilevers into supported spans. With two boats that means four end lines, and it is the reason the strapping section below is longer than it looks like it should be.
Mixing boat types
Two identical recreational boats are the easy case. The common real case is one of each — a sit-in and a sit-on-top, or a light boat and a heavy one — and that decides the arrangement more than any product does.
Put the heavier boat on the saddle, where it slides on from the back and is supported on its hull. Put the lighter boat on edge in the cradle. This is the mixed arrangement in the table above, and it exists because of exactly this situation.
A sit-in on edge needs its cockpit covered, or it fills with rain on the drive and arrives heavier than it left. A sit-on-top drains itself and does not care.
Two boats on edge in a stacker should be similar in length. A 9-foot boat and a 14-foot boat against the same post leave five feet of the longer hull unsupported by anything but its neighbor.
Wind, noise and what two boats do to the drive
One kayak on a roof is noticeable at highway speed. Two are a different vehicle.
Two boats on edge present two vertical surfaces to a crosswind, and a gust on a bridge moves the car in a way one boat never does. Two boats flat are quieter and less affected by side wind, and cost more bar width, which is the trade the saddle arrangement makes.
Fuel economy drops meaningfully with two boats up, and the drop is larger for boats on edge. None of this is a reason not to carry two; it is a reason to slow down, leave more following distance, and check the straps at the first stop rather than the last.
Strapping two boats
Each boat gets its own two straps over the hull. Two boats do not share a strap, and a strap over both is a strap holding neither.
Bow and stern lines are per boat too, and here the arithmetic bites: four end lines, four hull straps, eight tie-downs before you leave the driveway. It is tedious, and it is the reason a lot of two-boat owners end up with a trailer.
On a stacker, the boats are strapped to the post and to each other, and the strap passes over both hulls to the far side of the bar. Malone’s published instructions cover the routing; follow them rather than improvising, because a stacker strap routed wrong lets the outer boat rotate.
Cam buckles throughout. A ratchet can crush a polyethylene hull, and with two boats there are twice as many places to overtighten — the reasoning is on the tie-down strap roundup.
Buying the second carrier to match the first
Most people arrive at this page owning one carrier already, and the cheapest path is to buy a second of whatever fits the bars you have.
That works when the first carrier is a J-cradle or a saddle, both of which publish per-boat ratings and simply repeat. It does not work when the first carrier is a foam block kit: two boats on blocks is two boats sliding on each other, and there is no second block kit that makes it safe. A foam-block owner adding a second boat is buying a rack system, not a second kit.
Check the crossbar clamp too. Two carriers on one bar means two sets of clamps competing for the same length, and some cradle bases are wide enough that a pair will not both fit a short factory bar.
When two boats means a trailer
