The head unit is not the purchase
Every listing in this category prices one thing: a screen with a transducer in the box. On a powerboat that is genuinely most of the job, because the boat already has a battery, a transom to bolt the transducer to, and somewhere dry to run a wire.
A kayak has none of those. A traditional finder on a kayak needs, at minimum:
- A battery. Usually a small sealed lead-acid or lithium pack, in a waterproof box, with a fuse. This is not optional and it is not included with any head unit.
- Somewhere to put the transducer. Through a scupper hole on an arm, glued inside the hull shooting through the plastic, or on a purpose-made arm over the side. Each has a different cost and a different penalty.
- A mount for the screen. The tilt/swivel bracket in the box expects a flat horizontal surface that a kayak does not have. This is what a gear track is for.
- Wiring that survives being sat on and rained on.
Add those up honestly before you compare two head units on price. They routinely come to as much as the finder, and on the cheapest finders they come to more.
How we ranked these

Install cost is the criterion that does not appear on any other site in this category, and on a kayak it is the one that decides the purchase. It is why the two products here score close on the total while being completely different objects.

Read that depth row carefully. 1,600 feet against 150 sounds decisive and for most kayak fishing it is irrelevant — a farm pond, a reservoir arm or an estuary flat is nowhere near either figure. It matters if you fish deep water, and only then.
The beamwidth row matters more often than it looks. Garmin publishes 22 by 63 degrees at 260 kHz and 9 by 14 at 455 kHz for the Cast. A wide cone covers more ground and blurs detail; a narrow one is precise and misses things either side. Almost nothing at this price publishes the angles at all, which makes the comparison against unbranded finders impossible rather than unfavorable.
The transducer is the hard part
Three ways to get a transducer into the water from a kayak, and each has a real cost.
Through a scupper hole, on an arm. Clean, removable, and the transducer sits in clear water where it works properly. It needs a sit-on-top with a scupper in a useful position, and the arm is a separate purchase.
Glued inside the hull, shooting through the plastic. No holes, nothing in the water to hit a rock. You lose some signal through the hull, it will not read a temperature, and it is permanent in practice — the epoxy does not come off a used boat you might resell.
On an arm over the side. The cheapest and the most annoying. It is drag, it is in the way of your paddle stroke, and it is the first thing to hit a submerged branch.
None of these is included with any head unit. This is the specific gap that turns a modest finder into a real project, and it is the reason a castable sonar is a serious answer rather than a toy.
The castable case, made honestly
The STRIKER Cast is a floating pod you tie to a line and cast. Garmin publishes 75 grams, an IPX7 rating, a 200-foot wireless range, a built-in lithium battery good for about 10 hours, and a 16-foot tether.
What that removes is the entire install. No hole, no bracket, no battery box, no wiring, nothing to un-rig before you sell the boat. On a second-hand hull you may not keep, that is not a compromise — it is the strongest argument on this page.
What it costs you is real and worth stating plainly. Your phone becomes the screen, so a flat phone is a dead sonar and a phone out on deck in reach of spray is a more expensive problem than the pod. You are also limited to 150 feet of depth, and to whatever you can reach with a cast.
One buying trap: it is sold in versions with and without GPS, at meaningfully different prices, and the listings do not always make it obvious which is in the cart. Check before you pay.
Powering it, which is the cost nobody quotes
A traditional finder needs 12 volts and a kayak does not have any. The usual answer is a small sealed lead-acid battery or a lithium pack, in a waterproof enclosure, with an inline fuse.
Three things to get right, in the order they cause trouble:
- The fuse is not optional. A shorted battery in a plastic boat you are sitting in is the one genuinely dangerous outcome available in this whole category. Fuse it at the battery, not at the unit.
- The box matters more than the battery. A bare sealed battery loose in a hull slides, corrodes at the terminals and eventually leaks. A proper enclosure with a gland for the cable costs a fraction of the finder and prevents all three.
- Weight and position. A lead-acid battery of useful capacity is several pounds, and several pounds high up or off to one side is noticeable in a boat you are trying to stand in. Low, and on the center line.
The STRIKER Cast avoids all of it. Garmin publishes a built-in lithium-ion battery good for about 10 hours of typical use and roughly 1.5 hours to charge, which means the power plan is “charge it the night before” rather than a project.
That difference is not a small convenience. For a lot of people it is the difference between a finder that gets used and a finder that stays in the garage because rigging it takes twenty minutes.
Reading a screen you cannot shade
A powerboat has a console and often a windshield. A kayak has your lap and the sun.
Garmin publishes 3.6 by 5.9 by 1.6 inches for the STRIKER 4 body, of which 3.5 inches diagonal is screen. That is small, and you are reading it at arm's length, in glare, while the boat moves under you. It is legible — people fish with these constantly — but go in expecting to angle it rather than glance at it.
Which is an argument for the mount as much as the unit. A screen on a fixed bracket points one way; a screen on a track-mounted arm can be tilted out of the sun, dropped out of the way of a cast and taken off entirely when you leave the boat at a launch. That last one matters more than it sounds.
The phone-as-screen route has the opposite problem. Modern phones are far brighter and far more readable than a 3.5-inch marine display — and they lock, sleep, overheat in direct sun and refuse to work with wet fingers. Neither is straightforwardly better; they fail in different ways.
What we would skip entirely
Anything that publishes a screen size and an adjective. The sub-hundred-dollar unbranded finders describe themselves as “high definition” and “professional” and publish no frequencies, no beam angles and no depth capability. You cannot compare an adjective, and a finder you cannot compare is one you are buying on faith.
A finder before a rod holder, an anchor or a crate. Electronics are the most fun purchase in kayak fishing and close to the last one that improves a day out. The sequence that actually works is on the fishing accessories checklist.
A battery bought without a box and a fuse. A bare sealed battery loose in a hull is a bad day waiting. If you are going the traditional route, budget the enclosure at the same time.
What a finder actually tells you, and what it does not
Worth calibrating expectations before spending anything, because the gap between the marketing images and a real screen is where disappointment lives.
Depth and bottom hardness: reliably. This is the thing a finder is genuinely excellent at, and it is also the thing most kayak anglers actually use. Finding the drop-off, the channel edge, the transition from mud to gravel — that is structure, and structure is where fish are.
Fish, as arches, sometimes. A clean arch means a target passed through the cone at a steady speed. From a drifting kayak, at low speed, in a narrow cone, you will see fewer clean arches and more blobs and lines than a boat moving at trolling speed does. That is physics, not a fault in the unit.
Which species, or how big: no. Fish-ID icons are an interpretation layer drawn over the same returns, and they are confident about things the sonar does not know. Most experienced users turn them off and read the raw trace.
The practical consequence for a kayak is that the wide, low-frequency setting is usually more useful than the narrow one. Garmin publishes 22 by 63 degrees at 260 kHz for the STRIKER Cast against 9 by 14 at 455 — the wide cone covers ground while you drift slowly, and the narrow one is for detail directly beneath a boat that is holding position, which a kayak rarely is.
What we would buy
If the boat is a keeper and you fish it thirty days a year, the STRIKER 4. Published CHIRP frequencies, real GPS waypoints and 1,600 feet of freshwater capability, and you accept that the battery, the transducer arm and the mount are three more purchases before it works.
If the boat is second-hand and you may move it on, the STRIKER Cast. There is nothing to install, nothing to undo, and it publishes more beam detail than the unit costing the same with a screen attached.
If you have not yet sorted out where a screen would even go, buy neither this month. Fit a track first — it is the cheapest part of the whole system and everything else bolts to it. The rigging order is on rigging a used fishing kayak.

What it gets right
- Garmin publishes frequencies, depth capability and dimensions. The sub-hundred-dollar no-name finders publish a screen size and an adjective, and you cannot compare an adjective.
- GPS waypoints matter more from a kayak than from a powerboat, because you cannot hold position — marking the spot is how you find it again after the wind has moved you a hundred yards.
- Transom and trolling-motor mounts plus the tilt/swivel bracket are all in the box, so the mounting problem is partly solved before you start improvising.
What it gets wrong
- Nothing about it is kayak-specific. There is no battery, no kayak-shaped mount and no scupper or in-hull transducer arm, and between them those three are a large share of what the finished installation actually costs.
- Three and a half inches is a small screen, and you are reading it in daylight glare at arm's length while the boat moves.
Who should skip it
Skip it if you are not prepared to buy, charge and carry a sealed lead-acid or lithium battery every trip. The head unit without a power plan is an ornament.

What does a kayak fish finder actually cost to install?
Considerably more than the head unit, and no listing tells you that. A traditional finder needs a battery in a waterproof box with a fuse, a way to get the transducer into the water, a mount for the screen and wiring that survives being sat on. None of those come in the box.
Garmin's STRIKER 4 includes the unit, a dual-beam transducer, transom and trolling-motor mounts, a tilt/swivel bracket and a power cable — but no battery and no kayak-specific mount. Add those up before comparing two finders on their sticker prices.
Is a castable sonar good enough for kayak fishing?
For most kayak water, yes. Garmin publishes 260/455 kHz, a depth range from under 2 feet to 150 feet, beamwidths of 22 by 63 degrees and 9 by 14 degrees, a 200-foot wireless range and about 10 hours of battery for the STRIKER Cast.
Its real advantage is that there is nothing to install and nothing to remove before you sell the boat. Its real cost is that your phone is the screen, and 150 feet is a fraction of what a fixed unit will read.
Where do you mount a transducer on a kayak?
Three options, each with a penalty. Through a scupper hole on an arm is cleanest and puts the transducer in clear water, but needs a sit-on-top with a scupper in the right place and the arm is a separate purchase.
Glued inside the hull shooting through the plastic means no holes and nothing to hit, at the cost of some signal, no temperature reading, and being effectively permanent. On an arm over the side is cheapest and is drag, paddle interference and the first thing to hit a branch.
Do you need GPS on a kayak fish finder?
It matters more from a kayak than from a powerboat, because you cannot hold position. Wind moves you off a spot within a minute, and a waypoint is how you find it again.
